Nicaragua

Nicaragua – you are on my list!

Next on my agenda was visiting my 126th country, Nicaragua!  Scoring a new country is always exciting to me.  And best of all, when I get to fly FIRST CLASS!!  What a treat!  I had wanted to come up with a travel video blog, so I filmed loads of footage.  But in the end, I made it into a short one minute clip (posted on Facebook) that doesn’t do this under-visited country justice.  The speeded-up footage of my drive through the country unfortunately isn’t that far off from how I experienced it, but I did enjoy what I saw and the place I stayed for my short time there.  One thing I find interesting is that each of the Latin American countries have their own unique accented Spanish; I’m pretty good at picking out an Argentine or Chilean speaker from someone from Mexico or Spain itself.  But it’s always nice for me to be (mostly) understood in each of the Spanish speaking countries, although there are always a few words that remind you of your foreigner status, just as a U.S. traveller will be surprised when they ask for “pop” in a town where it’s just “soda.”  Luckily, or unluckily for those dieting, most of the Latin American countries have their own versions of the delicious empanada. Like the various countries of the world, the differences make life exciting and travel worth doing.

PYO Flute Choir

Another delightful aspect of my work is conducting my kids at my Flute Choir, the flutists of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra in the Bay Area.  I so much enjoy introducing the young flutists to the repertoire that I grew up performing.  I really enjoy finding the arrangements and then rehearsing them.  As I don’t have children of my own, I consider them all my “flute babies” and I very much adore each one of them.  Their Christmas concert this year put everyone in the holiday spirit, with performances of Chinese Dance and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, March Militaire by Schubert, Canon in D by Pachelbel, and concluded with Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson.

Florida State University & University of Northern Florida

Another highlight of my job is teaching, lecturing and performing at Universities around the world.  I have taught at over 50 universities worldwide.  This Fall I presented at Florida State University in Tallahassee and at the University of Northern Florida in Jacksonville.  After teaching at UNF, I drove to the Atlantic Ocean and had a fabulous oceanfront meal under the stars and the epic super moon.  A night to remember, for sure!  The following day, I visited Eva Amsler at Florida State University where I gave a masterclass, performed a recital and gave a mini Business of Music Lecture.  I am so grateful to get such great sponsorship from the fabulous flute company, Altus Handmade Flutes.

Hawaii 2016

The best part of my job continues to be the fact that I get to travel extensively.  I get such a high out of both traveling and performing and I feel so lucky to be able to do a lot of BOTH!  After NFA, my flute brought me to Honolulu where I picked up the ukulele!  I performed Tiny Bubbles accompanying a singer with my ukulele.  It was awesome!  Once home, I ordered one and I plan to bring it with me on my next trip to Hawaii next month.

NFA 2016

The National Flute Association convention is always very busy for me as I tend to over-extend myself as well as finding a need for extreme time management.  As the NFA Public RelationsChair, this year I brought in the San Diego Tribune and NBC TV to cover the convention.  I interviewed Denis Bouriakov and Leonard Garrison.  I also performed alongside Alice K. Dade and Fluterscooter as part of the Flutes by the Sea Trio, which originated out of my Flutes by the Sea Masterclasses held with those two great flutists in Half Moon Bay each June or July.  I decided to stay “off campus” for NFA at an oceanfront Airbnb, which turned out to be the best decision ever.  As I can’t stay too far from my beloved ocean, it was such a treat for me to be able to leave the flutes to tend to my ocean.  The best part was finding that amazing vegan restaurant, Plant Power, on the way “home”.  I ended up eating breakfast, lunch and dinner there every day…. it was THAT good.  The NFA itself each year brings home to me just how good the level of flute playing in the United States has become, with each year’s performances by new young talent surpassing the last.

Chilean Flute Festival

I absolutely loved my time at the Chilean Flute Convention in Villarica, Chile.  Organized by Hernan Jara, the event was a beautiful exchange between the Chilean flute students and the various guest artists which included Michele Bellavance and the multi-talented Juan Pablo Aguayo.  The Festival, now in its 15th year, was superbly organized and showcased a wonderful range of activities, masterclasses, recitals, flute choirs, flute exhibits and competitions.  The town of Villarica is located in the incredibly scenic lake region of Chile.  The concert hall overlooked a lake that is at the foot of a majestic snow capped (dormant) volcano.  The festival hotel lodging was walking distance away thru the lakeside trail.  I felt enchanted the whole time I was there, performing, teaching and smiling all the way. My birth country’s long, long coastline has many different climates and a varied geography, but the Chilean people are uniformly welcoming and places such as Villarica are undiscovered jewels off most people’s radar.  Like the amazing Las Torres Del Paine National Park in southern Chile, the lake district offers lots of natural beauty that you can have practically to yourself, if you’re willing to forego having your double macchiato creme latte from a certain Seattle-based chain before setting out in the morning.

Whale Tale

Whale & Viviana GuzmanClose Encounters of the Cetacean Kind

I can’t believe I haven’t posted about the most EPIC EVENT of my life!  How many of us visit a Humpback Whale as closely or as often as I have?  How many whales get serenaded by a flutist?  How many flutists get close to a million views on YouTube?!

This once in a lifetime event (for the whale, of course) lead to all sorts of interviews and global media attention including CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, Good Morning America, Huffington Post, LA Times, NY Post, Australian TV, Japan TV, German TV, Chilean TV…. it was unbelievable to witness how the media took off and ran with my story.  Basically I posted the video before flying to Chile.  I woke up, and all my inboxes were exploding with requests to air the video.  I discovered some in boxes I didn’t even know I had!!

I feel like my whale came, kissed and blessed me and went on it’s merry way.  I was left astounded and on Cloud Nine for months afterwards.  What an amazing encounter!  Not only do I absolutely ADORE swimming in the ocean, but I feel so blessed every time life brings me into a pod of dolphins, or when the seals say hello, or I hear the sweet porpoises breathe from my paddle board.  These are the gifts in life that I treasure the most.  I feel so fortunate to have been able to witness such precious moments.  Symbolic of that which cannot be easily vanquished, my Whale Tale inspired me to attend the American Cetacean Society Conference in Monterey.  It was there that I learned about the dreadful plight of the severely endangered Vaquitas in Mexico.  There are only 66 of these gentle souls left on our planet.  I’m afraid they face the terrible fate of extinction very soon.  Their story has inspired me to see if there is anything I can do during my tour through Mexico as I’ll be in Cabo in February.  In the meantime, I have been recording tracks for my next CD with the precious sounds of our sea faring neighbors…. stay tuned!

The Native American style flute is a musical instrument that anyone can learn to play.  I invite you to release the past and discover yourself as an intuitive musician, a spiritual song teller, a deep and conscious breathing life source.

The ease of playing this seemingly simple instrument is one of the best kept secrets in the musical world. Sharing the gift of the Native American style flute, especially to those who have not “found their instrument” due to a daunting learning curve of most instruments, is a great joy.  Many of us have wanted to be musical but did not want to devote the years of practice it takes to be comfortable playing. The Native American style flute is a distinctly different experience.

The Native American style flute is a forgiving and soothing instrument. In a short amount of time, with gentle direction and encouragement, you will be playing music with joy and confidence. Due to its portability, you can take your flute(s) anywhere and share its enchanting tones.

You may purchase your own Native American Indian Flute in “A” from HIGH SPIRITS or bring your own hopefully in the same key but if not, we can work around your situation.   The High Spirit Flutes are easy to play, you will see that you will be able to play very quickly.
